Airline Ancillary Revenue Hits Record Highs ✈️

Updated: Mar 10

The airline industry is evolving rapidly, and it is no longer enough to rely solely on ticket sales to drive profitability. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, commercial airlines have made significant investments in technology and automation to enhance their operations. One of the key focus areas has been ancillary revenue, which has played a crucial role in boosting the industry's financial health.

This strategic shift has paid off. According to recent industry reports, ancillary revenue has seen a remarkable growth of approximately 30% compared to pre-pandemic levels🚀. This increase is driven by a surge in sales of non-ticket items such as baggage fees, onboard retail, seat upgrades, and loyalty programme monetisation (Fig. 1). Notably, baggage fees and onboard sales make up the largest share of ancillary revenue, at 25% and 20%, respectively, followed by seat selection (15%) and loyalty programs (10%).

The Growing Importance of Ancillary Revenue

As airlines continue to adapt to changing passenger expectations and fluctuating market conditions, maximising ancillary revenue is now a fundamental part of their business model. It allows airlines to diversify their income streams, reduce dependency on fluctuating ticket prices, and enhance the overall passenger experience by offering customised services.

The key to success in this space lies in the seamless integration of smart technology that enables efficient sales and revenue management. Airlines need platforms that offer flexibility, automation, and deep integration with their existing ecosystems.

According to the latest industry data, ancillary revenue now accounts for 14.9% of total airline revenue in 2024, nearly doubling from 7.8% in 2015. This substantial growth highlights a significant shift in airline business models, where revenue streams such as baggage fees, onboard sales, seat selection, and loyalty programs are playing a much larger role in overall financial performance.
